THE GLADIATOR
I remember Rick got a pasting on this site not long ago.
I felt quite sorry for him. It appeared that he had rubbbed some people up the wrong way.

I'm speed reading through revelation right now...
by cptkirk inwaiting on a couple important phone calls, so figured may as well make some use of this time.
i'm going to try and catalogue every error in this book, hopefully can be done before the end of the day.
i'm sure a lot of folks have already disected this and nothing new to see.

Try reading Revalation backwards.
It still won't make any sense but it will bring you to another 65 'books' that that by comparison almost make sense.

Religion/Mental Illness/Schizoprenia
by ranmac ini have a very close friend whos history of traumatic experiences and drug use has culminated into very severe mental and physical detioratation.
i dont want to get into personal information but one major symptom is that he has become religiously deluded about himself.
to be blunt, he believes he is a special prophet chosen by jehovah.

OnTheWayOut "If you don't see or believe the things they see or believe, don't lead them to believe that you do."
This is good advice. Over the years I have known a number of people believing themselves to be a vehicle for either gods or demons. Politely pretending to share or even accept their delusion is neither kind, considerate or helpful.
If I come accross as having strong feelings against encouraging people suffering from this type of delusion there is a reason. To my great cost, my mother was one such person.

New Statesman: famous atheists explain why they don't believe in God...what is Hawking saying?
by unshackled inhttp://www.newstatesman.com/religion/2011/07/god-evidence-believe-world.
found this new statesman article linked in a sam harris tweet.
it is a collection of comments on reasons for non-belief from such ones as richard dawkins, daniel dennett, sam harris, jerry coyne and stephen hawking...to name a few.. what caught my eye about the tweet was this comment by harris, his actual tweet:.

Most atheists would say that there may be a god or gods. It's just that they have not found sufficient evidence to support such a belief at the present time. Until they do they will continue with their short life and take the cash in hand.
Personally, I rule nothing in and nothing out - I just shake it all about!

first contradiction in the bible?
by cptkirk incontradiction without the use of an outside medium (such as archaeology, fossil study).
i just stumbled on this after reading the thread about adam and the sexual subliminal message.
i was thinking about adam and eve and chronology, and a contradiction popped up in my head...so i picked up the bible and there it is.. gen 1:27 - god creates adam and eve, tells them to be fruitful.. gen 2:18 - now adam is alone?

This is very perceptive of you Terry. On my computer I have a collection of your most outstanding posts from over the years.
One day I may fashion them into a bible and present it to the world as the first inerrant, contradiction free bible. Of course, I will take the credit claiming that I inspired you. It will be called, 'Gladiator la Biblia.'

On becoming atheist - the tug of war
by Nickolas inperhaps, if you are a theist, you might not want to read this.
if you are nevertheless curious about how an atheist thinks, then please read on.. i don't think there are any active members of this board who have been atheists all their lives (are there?).
i think virtually all of us transitioned into non-belief from a religious beginning.

When it comes to evolution we have no need to ‘believe in’ it. We either do or do not accept it as an important part of the process for all life on earth. Some of the vilest people on earth accept evolution and embrace the idea that the survival of the fittest is a good moral code to adopt.
Whether or not we accept evolution at a mental level, at a molecular level we are all part of the evolutionary process anyway; whereas, the gift of eternal life is not on offer to those who merely accept the existence of a god of their choice. Faith and action are required. Faith without works is dead according to the zealous Paul.
To be a believer requires trying to help those who lack faith in their god to gain salvation and living by a set moral code. That is according to the bible which many Christians now dismiss as folklore. Muslims continue to believe the Koran to be inspired and holy.
It is possible to accept evolution but remain free to hold whatever cherished beliefs we wish to. Some Christians manage this amazing conjuring trick, which impresses me greatly.

First contradiction: 'In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.'
So where did our heavenly father reside before he created the heavens?
